Will Portugal Legalize Same-Sex Marriage?
Source:gayrights.change.org
Date:30 Sep 2009

Portugal held some elections over the weekend, and Socialist leader Jose Socrates is set for another four years as Prime Minister. Why is that significant? Because Socrates vowed to legalize same-sex marriage if he was re-elected. If he's prepared to follow through on his campaign promises, then marriage equality advocates should start counting down the days until another country is added to the same-sex marriage train.

It's rumoured among many Portuguese that Socrates himself may be "that way" inclined.

Yeah, Portugal can be quite conservative and Catholic: it's very family oriented, which is good as well as bad - but many young people live at home until they marry.  That's pretty much the formula, from what I've been told.

I don't know a huge amount about Portugal but I got the impression from a few Portguese peeps when I was over there that they actually consider Spain to be the more traditional, Roman Catholic country.

The whole Carnation Revolution period is still in it's recent past and I think peoples view of that has a moderating affect on consertive views.

All the gay bars in Lisbon are down side streets and you need to knock on the door to get in.

Dec 18th, 2009 | By click here

Over in Portugal, the government yesterday approved proposed legislation to remove references to gender in respect of marriage. (See also here, here and here, each in Portuguese.)

You know Portugal: extreme western European country (snap!); with the Catholic conservatism (snap!); and the economy that didn’t really feel much of a boom over the past couple of decades before the bottom fell out of, well, everything (hm, that’s where Ireland and Portugal differ slightly).

Portugal expected to approve gay marriage this week

By Staff Writer, PinkNews.co.ukJanuary 6, 2010 - 17:30

Portugal is expected to approve gay marriage this Friday when a bill comes up for debate in parliament.

It is thought the law is almost certain to pass, as left-wing parties who are supportive of gay marriage occupy a majority of seats.

If passed, it must go to a parliamentary committee before returning for final approval.

The bill would remove any references to gender in the country's marriage laws and would come into force in April, before Pope Benedict XVI's official visit the following month.

Source:www.theportugalnews.com
Date:12 June 2010

A lesbian couple who have become Portugal’s first same-sex couple to wed in an official ceremony, since the passing of the law allowing gay marriage last month, have now vowed that the next step in their fight for equality will be to tackle parenting rights, including the issue of adoption by same-sex couples.
