Cindy McCain endorses NOH8 gay marriage campaign
Failed presidential candidate John McCain opposes same-sex unions, but his wife and daughter think differently
Source: Guardian.co.uk | Thursday 21 January 2010

John McCain's staunch opposition to gay marriage was one of the key parts of his presidential campaign. But it has become clear this was not supported in his own household. His daughter, Meghan, is a vocal advocate of gay rights. Now his wife, Cindy, has appeared in a poster campaign against California's proposition 8 – a law banning same-sex marriage.

The move has shocked and delighted gay rights campaigners and led to questions about the state of the McCains' own marriage.

Cindy McCain appears in the poster with silver duct tape across her mouth and the campaign slogan, "NOH8", marked on her cheek.

Fair play to Meghan and Cindy McCain. I know it could have been devised solely as a PR stunt but it is what it is: Prominent members of the Republican party taking a positive stand for civil liberties. It's pretty bold and certainly welcome.

I'm not even gonna bother reading the rest of the article. John McCain is a decorated war hero and a long serving Senator. While I disagree with a lot of his policies, that description of him is just a low blow.

It's how most people remember him and know him though. Not everyone knew who he was until he ran for president.

I'm sorry but I have to ask: Am I the only one reading the end of the thread title as " failed presidential yeast infection" ? I'm clearly staring at a computer screen too long.

I agree with steve though. It is a horrible article for John McCain - In just the title, they're saying not only are you a big failure, but even your wife and daughter think you're wrong (though, in fairness, it's really great that they do.). Although the article seems to suggest that she just did it to get one over on her husband, which hopefully isn't the case.

The election run really was a bust for McCain. I do sort of feel sorry for him.

I actually considered leaving out that part of the sub-title when pasting in the above article because I thought it was cheap and nasty and not usually what I'd expect of The Guardian. I decided to leave it in to see if it sat uncomfortably with anyone else. Glad to see it didn't look appropriate to others as well.

The journalistic style aside though, the story which is its subject is a real turn-up for the books!

I would be more annoyed at the suggestion from the article that his marraige maybe in trouble solely on the basis that his wife and daughter have a different opinion then him. How insulting is that to him and the family. It's not unusal or bad that partners and family members disagree on topics, it should not be read as any comment on their marriage. So much for thinking the sterotype of the good silent obedient housewife where behind us.

His discription as a failed candidate in the election is at least factural.

Is the point of this article to make fun of John McCain or to discuss Cindy McCain's actions?
