When the Nuclear Holocaust comes, all that will remain will be Nissan Micras.....

And John Connor will be sent back in time to save humanity from the Micras.

No they're kinda like driving a tobacco tin. I remember driving a certain person's micra once and whacking my elbow off the window when I tried to indicate. TINY RIDICULOUS CARS.

A Micra, Corsa or Punto is not a sensible small car. A Volkswagen Lupo, Ford Fiesta or Subaru Justy are.

Councillors will consider plans to reduce new city speed limit
Source:www.irishtimes.com
Date:19 Feb 2010

DUBLIN CITY councillors will next month consider proposals to reduce, or eliminate, the area governed by the 30km/h speed limit introduced less than a month ago.
Bylaws to introduce the new speed restrictions were approved by an overwhelming majority of councillors last October, following a public consultation process during which no objections were received. However, their introduction on January 31st resulted in criticism from motoring lobby group the AA, several city councillors and national politicians, and some radio broadcasters.

The council's traffic department yesterday told councillors that although the new speed restrictions had attracted "much media coverage" they had not increased traffic congestion in the city centre and were an internationally accepted safety measure.

It's interesting. I was talking to some friends about this last night. First of all, one is a cyclist and one is a driver. Both are frustrated by this. I came away with a few main points:

As for the idea itself, apparently it didn't seem to bad on paper - the rezoned area was originally a patchwork of 30k and 40k areas arranged in a pattern that didn't make sense, so the idea was to make it uniform (or at least that's how it was marketed to some).

As for the implementation: The cyclist (who I know doesn't do stupid crap like break the lights and the like) finds the speed limit disconcerting. As in, he'd be going somewhere from 25-30k/h, and with the new speed limit, he'd know that there's a big car behind him, and expect it to overtake him. Instead, it just hovers along behind him, which makes him a bit more nervous. Does that make sense at all?

The driver pointed out that the limits are below a comfortable speed, so you're spending more time checking your speedometer than your mirrors, or looking out for folks like... cyclists, or another motorist doing something silly.

The other main complaint they both had was that there are no clear signs marking out the area of the 30k zone; areas that can take higher speed traffic and were not included in this limit are still clogged by people who think they have to go at 30.

At any rate, I'm a public transport user, so as long as I have my QBC, I'm generally not impacted.

I drove at 30k on the relevant area of the quays last night. Nobody else did.

As usual, too much law and not enough order. Those who keep to speed limits and drive safely do so, those who have driven at silly speeds will continue to do so.

A complete waste of time.
