George Lee quits Dáil and Fine Gael
Monday, 8 February 2010 13:25
rte.ie

George Lee has resigned from the Dáil and from Fine Gael, just nine months after his election.

He said the decision had been difficult, but that despite his best efforts, he had had virtually no influence on shaping Fine Gael's economic policies.

FG's deafening silence is ridiculous. Cowen's even got his oar in already, while Lee was bleating away on Liveline. What are FG HQ thinking?!

Highly entertaining Monday, though.

It's pretty sad that this is the case with a lot of people who go into government expecting to make real change.

I know a lot of people hate Gormley but listening to him talk about the incinerator the other day was actually quite invigorating. I think he still does hold that spark of wanting to really do something while realizing and accepting the limits that being in a coalition holds. If you can do that you're onto a winner but people who are principled and want real change never seem to get power because of those principles or they don't hold it because of the realization of harsh compromise.

We've even seen that with the Obama administration too. Not massive change but small tiny change.

I think it's a sad day. George had so much to give. I think this is an overall reflection of our political system though, that it does not necessarily always attract, or in this case retain, great mind that could actually change the country.
On a personal note I hope that George and his family are given privacy and respect during what I am sure is a difficult time for them. I dealt with George quite a bit in work for a few months before he left RTE and he is an absolute gent.

Lee spoke about going into politics for his kids sake. Now, nine months later he's throwing his toys out of the pram because he wasn't elevated to high office immediately.

Privacy? Don't make me f*ckn laugh. He's clearly a self-centred careerist.

I admire his honesty and feel it was a brave thing to do considering the backlash he may have received.

Letter in the Times this morn:

Madam, – Could George Lee’s departure from Fine Gael be the enda Kenny? – Yours, etc,

It does seem a bit premature to be calling it a day after only 9 months.  Were promises made, or did he just assume that he would get the top economics post in the party?  Richard Bruton seems to be doing the job just fine.  George Lee comes across as naive for sure, but it doesn't shine well on Enda Kenny that his celeb pick has turned on the party so soon.

For completeness's sake, also from the Irish Times letters this morning;

Madam, – George Lee’s resignation is an act of disloyalty to the 27,000 people who voted for him and to the hundreds of people who canvassed for him (Breaking News, February 8th). More than those, it is an act of gross betrayal to Fine Gael, which invested faith, time, and great energy in him.

Mr Lee’s experience as a television economics reporter and his nine months as a TD do not entitle him to a senior economic role in a party of 31,000 members. Fine Gael secured 605,333 votes in last summer’s local elections.

Yes, he is a qualified economist. But Fine Gael Senator Eugene Regan has vastly superior academic economic qualifications. Mr Lee’s former Fine Gael Oireachtas colleagues Joe McHugh TD, Kieran O’Donnell TD, and Senator Paschal Donohue are qualified economists. And his former colleagues Seán Barrett TD, Frank Feighan TD, and John Perry TD have vast practical understanding of commerce.

In any event, he was given ample scope in debate, through his position as chairperson of the Fine Gael Economic Forum, through his membership of the pre-Budget Fine Gael Business Roadshow, and through his weekly attendance at meetings of the Fine Gael Parliamentary Party.

There will be a few days of media heat, and the same tired anti-Fine Gael media voices will refrain, yet again, that this has “fatally undermined the Kenny leadership”.

When the political lava cools, who will be buried beneath? – Yours, etc,

The latest strange twist in this freak show...

Crowd-puller of messianic proportions takes to pulpit to spread his message
MICHAEL PARSONS in Borrisokane, Co Tipperary Tue, Feb 23, 2010 Irish Times

TWO WEEKS after he renounced Dáil Éireann, and all its works and all its pomps, George Lee appeared at a very different public forum last night – a Catholic Church Novena in Co Tipperary.

RTÉ’s former economics editor, who resigned as Fine Gael TD for Dublin South after just eight months, is one of a number of guest lay-speakers attending this week’s series of prayer meetings in Borrisokane.
