WITH wet and windy weather expected to continue for the rest of the week AA Roadwatch is urging motorists to take extra care.

Heavy rain in many areas of the country yesterday left a lot of roads flooded, creating extremely difficult driving conditions for motorists.

FLOODS, torrential rain and winds will hit Ireland over the next 48 hours -- with experts expecting the worst weather of the year to date.

Rivers burst banks and roads were flooded in a number of areas overnight, but the flooding is expected to worsen in the coming two days, with very heavy downpours predicted for tomorrow and Saturday.

MOTORISTS ARE being warned to take care on the roads today as Met Éireann predicts “more of the same” bad weather on the way, with heavy rain and gale force winds expected.

Meteorologist Aidan Nulty has predicted heavy rain and winds until late this evening with the worst weather expected in Connacht and Munster.

Widespread flooding causes major disruption

The Defence Forces have deployed more than 200 personnel to assist the civil authorities in dealing with the effects of flooding around the country.

The worst affected areas are in the west and south following heavy rain.

A number of roads remain closed and some bus and rail services have been cancelled. People have been advised not to travel unless it is necessary.

UCC student accommodation is being evacuated due to the flooding. All classes are cancelled due to flood damage today, Monday 23rd and for several days thereafter.

18,000 Cork households face week without water

Water supplies to over 18,000 householders in Cork city are unlikely to be restored for at least a week following extensive damage to the city's main pumping station, Cork City Manager, Joe Gavin has warned.

The entire northside of Cork city and a section of the southside are currently without water supplies after the River Lee flooded the pumping station on the Lee Road early on Friday morning, resulting in the station being submerged under several metres of water.

Showers of sleet and snow are forecast in many areas with widespread severe frosts leading to icy roads.

The Road Safety Authority is urging road users to take extreme care.

Motorists warned over icy roads

Light snowfall and icy conditions in parts of the country have left roads in a treacherous condition, motorists have been warned.

Conditions were bad in parts of Dublin, Kildare, Wicklow, Cavan, Carlow, Tipperary and Wexford, with road temperatures below zero on most routes, AA Roadwatch said.

The motoring organisation urged motorists to drive with extra care, slow down and keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front.

Motorists have been urged to be extremely careful on the roads this morning as the cold snap continues to make driving hazardous.

Gardaí right across the country are advising motorists to proceed with caution and avoid all unnecessary journeys.

The most dangerous road conditions have been reported in northerly and midland counties.
